Tebrau Food Truck Park: what to order, when to go

Tebrau Food Truck Park is exactly what it sounds like: an open-air car park in front of Toppen Shopping Centre, next to IKEA, that fills up with food trucks every evening. It's become one of the more reliable "something for everyone" stops on the Mount Austin/Tebrau side of Johor Bahru, mostly because the lineup changes enough that a repeat visit doesn't feel repetitive.

When to actually go

Weekdays bring a more modest spread — around nine to twelve trucks, still enough for a proper meal but with less to browse. Weekends are the real draw, with the lineup swelling to roughly twenty trucks. If you want the full experience, go on a Friday or Saturday night; if you just want dinner without the crowd, a weekday works fine. Hours run from around 7pm to midnight either way.

Ais kepal Milo — shaved ice soaked in Milo, sometimes with extras like Oreo crumbs or condensed milk — is the single most photographed item. Nasi ganja (a spiced rice dish; the name is a nickname, not a reference to its actual ingredients) is a common savoury pick. Bakso, an Indonesian meatball soup, and straightforward goreng pisang round out a meal that covers both sweet and savoury without needing to commit to just one truck.

Trucks are parked in rows in the open lot, and the usual approach is to walk the length of it once before ordering anything, since new trucks rotate in and what's popular can shift from visit to visit. Seating is typically shared and informal — bring your own patience for finding a spot on a busy weekend night.

How it compares to a regular pasar malam

Tebrau Food Truck Park is often described alongside JB's pasar malam scene, but the format is genuinely different: a pasar malam moves to a different housing estate each night of the week and mixes food with clothes, produce and household goods, while the truck park stays in one fixed spot every evening and is food-only. If you want the social, browse-everything atmosphere of a night market, a pasar malam is the better fit; if you specifically want food and don't want to plan around which night a market happens to be running, the truck park is the more reliable option.

Bringing kids

The open lot format and rotating trucks make this an easier stop for families than a sit-down restaurant — kids can walk around, pick what they want, and there's no pressure to order a full meal from a single menu. It's less structured than a food court but more forgiving of a group with mixed appetites and short attention spans.

Getting there

It's directly in front of Toppen Shopping Centre and next to IKEA Tebrau, which makes it an easy add-on if you're already at either mall — no need for a separate trip. From the Mount Austin café strip, it's roughly a ten-minute drive, useful if an afternoon of dessert crawling turns into an evening looking for something savoury.

We didn't find a reliable, venue-wide halal statement for Tebrau Food Truck Park — with a rotating set of independent trucks, halal status likely varies truck to truck rather than applying to the whole park. If it matters to you, check with the specific truck before ordering rather than assuming either way.

What to bring

Cash still matters more here than at a mall food court — with independent trucks rather than a single POS system, not every vendor accepts e-wallets, and QR payment coverage can vary truck to truck. Bring a mix of small notes so you're not stuck at one truck's card machine while the rest of the group has already moved on to the next one.
