JB night markets (pasar malam) near KSL and Taman Pelangi: which night, what to eat

A pasar malam is a night market that moves: the same traders set up in a different housing estate each evening of the week, roughly 4 pm to 10 pm, selling produce, clothes, phone cases and — the reason you are reading this — a lot of fried food. On the KSL City Mall side of Johor Bahru, two of them are easy for visitors.

Monday — KSL City Mall

Set up on the road directly in front of KSL City Mall, stretching towards the Grand Paragon Hotel, from around 4 pm. This is the biggest and most tourist-friendly one because half the customers are hotel guests. Expect grilled squid, satay, ramly burgers, fried chicken, sugar-cane juice, cut fruit, and stalls of clothes and gadgets. It winds down by 10 pm.

Tuesday — Taman Pelangi

The Pelangi pasar malam sets up near Leisure Mall in Taman Pelangi from about 4 pm. Slightly more local than KSL's: more vegetable and meat stalls, more households doing their weekly shop, and a good spread of Malay snacks — kuih, keropok lekor, pisang goreng, and the thick apam balik carts.

Taman Sentosa

Taman Sentosa's night market is smaller and calmer, with a reputation for its laksa and chicken chop stalls. Its night is not consistently reported across guides, so confirm locally before planning around it. Taman Sentosa is also worth a visit in daylight for bak kut teh (Shoon Huat), paper-baked herbal chicken (Teck Sing) and seafood noodles (Hai Kah Lang) on Jalan Sutera.

Other nights

There is a market somewhere every night — Taman Johor Jaya, Taman Daya, Taman Universiti and others — but they rotate and the online lists disagree with each other. The reliable method is to ask at your hotel front desk which pasar malam is on tonight; they always know.

Night-market rules

1. Cash, small notes. Many stalls now also show a DuitNow QR — Singapore PayNow does not work on it, so carry ringgit.
2. Fried things are best from stalls with a queue: the oil is turning over.
3. Buy fruit last so it does not get crushed.
4. Rain cancels nothing; the tarpaulins go up and everyone keeps frying.

The apam balik you will find there — and the other kind

Every pasar malam has at least one apam balik cart, almost always the thick, spongy style, poured into small deep pans and sold by the half-round. Good, and RM2.50–4.
