Tepian Tebrau after dark: Tip Top, Ayong and the seaside supper strip

Tepian Tebrau is JB's seaside supper strip, a row of grilled-seafood stalls facing the Straits of Tebrau that traces its roots back to the old Lido beach hawkers. Two names dominate the conversation: Tip Top and Gerai Ayong, both decades-old and both still doing brisk business after dark.

Tip Top Ikan Bakar

Tip Top is probably the most famous BBQ stingray stall in JB, a 30-year-old operation at Gerai No.11 in Medan Selera Tepian Tebrau. The stingray comes grilled and slathered in a sambal that locals describe as the real draw — spicy enough to notice, not so much that it overwhelms the fish. It's the stall most first-timers are pointed toward when they ask what to order here.

Gerai Ayong

Ah Yong started this stall 40 years ago with his sister, one of several vendors that moved to Tepian Tebrau when the old Lido beach stalls closed. The menu runs wider than Tip Top's — ikan bakar, rojak, and sotong kangkung (stir-fried squid and water spinach) alongside the grilled seafood — making it the better stop if your table wants variety rather than a single showpiece dish.

This isn't a quick dinner stop — Tepian Tebrau is built for a slow evening: order a few grilled dishes, share them across the table, and let the meal run late. Most of the energy here builds after dark, so an early-evening visit will feel quieter than the supper-hour crowd the strip is known for.

Weather and seating

Tepian Tebrau is an open-air setup facing the water, which means it's genuinely pleasant on a clear evening but exposed if it rains — JB gets sudden downpours, especially in the wetter months, so it's worth having a backup plan or accepting that a sudden shower might cut a supper session short. Seating is mostly plastic tables and chairs rather than anything formal, which suits the casual, sit-and-share nature of the meal but isn't the place for a special-occasion dinner.

Getting there

Tepian Tebrau sits along Jalan Tengku Petri. It's a Grab ride from most parts of JB rather than a walkable stop, and there's no MRT/bus route that makes sense for a one-off supper trip, so budget for a car or ride-hail both ways.

Closing the night
